Quick 5

Where has August gone?  I've never known a month to go by so fast (except maybe December).

1.  It truly is that time of year again: when I start counting down the days to cooler weather.  I find myself getting on Weather Channel.com and looking at monthly averages, trying to figure out when I can reasonably expect comfortable temps, even if it proves to be a warmer-than-average fall.  I think longingly of hot drinks, cool days, jeans, and soft, cozy sweaters.  But more than that, I am realizing that a big reason I wish for fall is my schedule.  Last winter, we were so rarely busy that I at times felt I had no life.  Now, I wish there were days where I didn't have to drag my kids somewhere.  I am hoping for plenty of snow days to keep us hemmed in at home.  I may regret those words later, but truly, right now, I'd love to just stay home with my babies and watch them play and grow.

2.  My birthday was last week.  I am now 32.  This doesn't feel too momentous.  It was a nice birthday week.  Among newest additions to my little stockpile of possessions are a portable dishwasher (glorious!), a sewing machine, and baking stones.  All things I couldn't be more excited about.  Dish-washing has become my least favorite chore and one that I will balk at once a week or more.  Now I can rinse dishes, put them in the dishwasher and my kitchen looks uncluttered in seconds.  The sewing machine I intend to use for my new found goal of learning to sew, and specifically learning to sew clothes for myself and my kids.  (And Nick, if he'd wear them.)  The baking stones, I will bake with.  Duh, okay, yeah.  But specifically I'm looking forward to their performance in the homemade pizza department and to bake bread on.  Too exciting.

3.  Speaking of my birthday, my diet has been wrecked.  Completely sidelined this past week.  But I figure, hey, your birthday is only once a year.  Totally worth it.  I will begin again this next week.  I also am resolving to getting back to P90X every day.  When I was eating plenty of calories and P90X-ing it up (as Nick and I say) every day on a consistent basis, I saw good results.  The past few weeks I've been getting in maybe four workouts, which sounds good on the outset, but the results have slowed significantly.  So, back to discipline I go.  I think it's going to mean making naptime sacred: no appointments during naptime!  That way I have designated time very day to get it done.

4.  I am seriously considering participating in National Novel Writing Month this year.  I know: going from one major writing project to another?  Doesn't sound like a good idea when I say it that way.  But this would be for 30 days, not for the an entire season.  And I've always wanted to do it.  Why not step out and try it?  Even if I'm not a winner (i.e. don't get it done), I'd like to try.  But I think I should think about it some more.  Anyone want to join me?

5.  I'm sure I have a 5., but I can't think of it.  Actually, I know I have one, but I don't think it's common knowledge yet, and as it's not my news to share I'll wait until the next Quick 5.  Hopefully actually on Friday this time.

Happy Week, all.
